Eider down, which comes from eider ducks, is extremely high-quality down. They serve as natural insulation against the cold and offer the offspring protection from low temperatures during the breeding season. These light, delicate feathers are used specifically for duvets and pillows to ensure exclusive sleeping comfort.

An eiderdown can grow up to 2.5 centimeters in size, comparable to the diameter of a 2 euro coin. Its outstanding insulating properties and exceptional loft make eiderdown the preferred choice for duvets, sleeping bags and outdoor clothing. Furthermore, there is no other material with similar thermal properties at the same weight as eiderdown.

The special nature of eiderdown is reflected in its size, fineness and dense branching, which sets it apart from conventional down. The dimensions of the down are closely linked to the cold environment of the eider duck - the colder, the larger the down. This increase in size allows the filaments to branch even more densely, creating more space for air to be stored. This air storage in turn increases the insulation capacity and thermal performance of the down.

The special nature of this valuable down manifests itself in tiny barbs that are not visible to the naked eye. These are used to weave the down together in the eider duck's nest building. Even as a filling material, the down forms a feather-light, air-permeable cushion with extraordinary air retention. In addition, a duvet made of eiderdown gives your surroundings an ultra-light feel and ensures exclusive, top-class sleeping comfort.

In short: Eider down is the largest down available, extremely voluminous and incredibly light. It offers excellent loft and thermal insulation.

Similar to other valuable raw materials (e.g. gold), eiderdown is subject to price fluctuations that are influenced by current market factors. The rarer eiderdown becomes available, the higher its price rises.

The high price can be partly explained by the complex process of obtaining this rarity. To fill around 500 grams of eiderdown in a duvet measuring 140x200cm, on average the down from 35 nests must be collected and processed by hand. Added to this is the fact that eider ducks only breed from May to June and can therefore only be harvested once a year. Nevertheless, investing in such a high-quality down duvet is worthwhile because no other type of down offers comparable warming properties as eiderdown.

The collection and processing of the down requires an extensive procedure that is carried out after the ducks have moulted. The down left in the nest is collected by hand and then subjected to a processing process. Around 1,000 pieces of eiderdown weigh just one gram, which is why experienced collectors need around eight hours to collect one kilogram of eiderdown. After the painstaking collection of the down, gentle cleaning is required.

Due to the comparatively high moisture content of the raw materials due to their proximity to the sea, the down is first dried with hot air at 110°C to make the down germ-free. The down is then removed from hay, eggshells and other coarse contaminants using specially developed shaking machines. The down is then carefully sorted by hand so that in the end only the fluffy and feather-free down is kept. Finally, the down is gently cleaned and dried before it can be used as filling material.

Down has the remarkable ability to adapt its thermal performance to different conditions and external influences. This adaptability is due to their unique structure. Down is three-dimensional puffs with many small branches that trap tiny pockets of air. These air pockets serve as insulators and store body heat extremely well.

When it's cold, the down keeps the heat close to the body and forms a warming layer. In warmer temperatures, down can wick away excess heat and moisture by improving air circulation. This regulating effect allows down products to optimize sleeping comfort all year round and keep the body comfortably warm in different temperatures without excessive sweating.

The QUQON Royal eiderdown duvet is available in medium and warm heat levels. We recommend the medium version as a year-round blanket and the warm version for autumn and winter. Other heat levels such as Light and Extra Warm are also available upon request!
